ROADS CLOSED!!: CHAN tournament to start on Sunday, here are the traffic changes and alternative routes to use

The wait is finally over! The African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament is kicking off this Sunday, August 3, 2025, and Nairobi is at the heart of the action. As one of the host cities for this prestigious continental tournament, our beloved capital is buzzing with excitement. The city will be alive with the energy of thousands of fans, officials, and, of course, our very own Harambee Stars as they take on Africa’s finest.

The CHAN tournament is a unique football showcase, different from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in that it features only players who are active in their country’s domestic leagues. This means we’ll get to see the very best homegrown talent from across the continent, making it a true celebration of local football. With our own Harambee Stars in the mix, playing their group stage matches at the Moi International Sports Centre (Kasarani Stadium), the atmosphere is going to be electric.

Navigating the City: A Guide to Road Closures and Diversions

With all this excitement comes some significant changes to our daily commute. Nairobi Traffic Commandant, Joseph Chirchir, has issued a comprehensive traffic advisory to help us all get around safely and efficiently. To ensure the smooth movement of teams, officials, and fans, and for enhanced security, several key roads will be partially or completely closed.

Here’s what you need to know about CHAN road closure:

  • Aerodrome Road will be fully closed from Madaraka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout.
  • One side of Lang’ata Road will be closed between Madaraka Roundabout and Lusaka Roundabout.
  • Mombasa Road will have one side restricted from Lusaka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout.

The police have also provided the following alternative routes to help us navigate the city:

  • If you’re on Mombasa Road heading to the CBD, you are advised to use the Likoni–Enterprise Road at General Motors or the Southern Bypass via Ole Sereni.
  • For those on Lang’ata Road heading to the CBD, you should divert to Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road at the Mbagathi Roundabout.
  • Traveling from the CBD to Thika, Ruiru, Juja, and Thika Road? Your best bet is to use either Limuru Road or Kiambu Road.
  • Matatus ferrying fans to Kasarani Stadium have a specific route: Ruaraka–Baba Dogo Road, Ngomongo Road, and then to Ngomongo Roundabout.
  • Thika Road-bound motorists are advised to opt for the Eastern Bypass, Kiambu Road, or Limuru Road.

It’s essential to plan your journeys, cooperate with traffic police, and be patient on the roads. Let’s make sure everyone gets to their destination safely and on time to cheer on our national team during the CHAN tournament.
