The African Nations Championships – CHAN - will take place in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania between 2 and 30 August.

The 2024 CHAN tournament, a competition exclusively for players plying their trade in African domestic leagues, is set to be a spectacular event, featuring 19 teams battling for glory. The action kicks off on August 2 at the William Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, before shifting to Nairobi for the crucial Group A games. The spotlight will then move to Kampala’s Mandela National Stadium in Uganda, making this the first CHAN to be held across three nations. This momentous event, originally slated for last year, was postponed to ensure the improvement of venues and the completion of qualifying matches, guaranteeing a world-class experience for players and fans alike.

Hussein Mohammed, the boss of the Football Kenya Federation, expressed his gratitude to Caf for their trust and guidance, emphasizing that “All eyes are now on Kenya as we gear up to deliver a world-class tournament.” The Confederation of African Football (Caf) launched CHAN in 2009 to showcase the immense talent within the continent’s domestic leagues. Past winners include Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), who claimed the inaugural tournament in Cote d’Ivoire and added another title in 2016, Tunisia, and back-to-back champions Morocco in 2018 and 2022.

Co-hosts Kenya will be making their debut at the tournament, led by the astute former South Africa striker, Benni McCarthy. In an interview with the football website flashscore, the 47-year-old acknowledged his side’s underdog status in a formidable Group A, dubbed the “group of death,” which includes DRC, Morocco, Angola, and Zambia. “It is clear for everyone to see and to know that we are in a group of death. It is an impossible group to be in but a fantastic challenge for us to see how far we have come and where we are at as a football nation,” McCarthy stated, exuding confidence in his well-prepared players.

Kenya will launch their CHAN 2024 campaign against two-time champions DRC on August 3 at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani Stadium. Following this challenging opener, they will face Angola, Morocco, and Zambia in the subsequent group stage matches. The top two teams from each of the four groups will progress to the quarter-finals, where penalty shoot-outs will decide ties after 30 minutes of extra-time. McCarthy believes that playing on home turf will be a significant advantage. “The fact that we play at home, we will have so many thousands of Kenyan supporters that will be behind the team, and spur the team on,” he added. “I think we are excited and ready for the challenge.”
