Max Verstappen Takes on the Green Hell:  Nürburgring 24 Hours

The world of motorsport is buzzing as Max Verstappen, the reigning four-time Formula 1 world champion, prepares to tackle one of the most daunting challenges in racing: the Nürburgring 24 Hours. Known as “The Green Hell,” this legendary endurance race is a far cry from the pristine asphalt of F1 circuits, and all eyes are on the Dutchman to see if his dominance translates to the grueling Nordschleife.

A New Frontier for the F1 Champion

At 28 years old, Max Verstappen is at the peak of his powers. While many drivers wait until the twilight of their careers to explore endurance racing, Verstappen has made it clear that he wants to conquer these iconic events while he is still at his fastest. His transition into GT3 racing hasn’t been a sudden whim; it is the result of a meticulously planned preparation phase, including multiple outings at the Nordschleife over the past year to secure the necessary licensing.

This weekend, he steps away from his usual open-wheel machinery to pilot a Red Bull-branded Mercedes-AMG GT3. Racing under his own “Verstappen Racing” banner, he joins a powerhouse lineup featuring Dani Juncadella, Jules Gounon, and Lucas Auer.

Qualifying Drama in the Rain

The preparation for the great race has already been a test of nerves. During the second qualifying session on Thursday, heavy rain battered the 15.769-mile circuit, making the “Green Hell” more treacherous than ever. Because the night session was so wet, most teams were unable to improve on their times from the afternoon.

Max Verstappen and his team showed steady pace despite the conditions. While the #1 Rowe Racing BMW M4 GT3 led the night session, the Verstappen Racing crew finished the day third overall, just 3.6 seconds off the top pace. In the pitch-black, rain-soaked conditions, Juncadella clocked the team’s best lap, while Verstappen completed the mandatory night-time flying lap required for all entrants.Green Hell'23 | Nürburgring Nordschleife

Navigating the Challenges of the Nordschleife

The Nürburgring 24 Hours is a unique beast. Unlike a standard F1 race, Max Verstappen will have to navigate a field of over 160 cars across 23 different classes. This means constantly overtaking slower traffic on a narrow, hedge-lined track where one mistake can end a team’s weekend.

Key sections like the Sabine Schmitz bend and the high-speed Döttinger Höhe straight—where cars reach speeds of over 190mph—will be the primary battlegrounds. For Verstappen, who is used to the precision of sprint racing, the challenge will be maintaining focus through 24 hours of traffic, driver changes, and the unpredictable Eifel weather.

Why Verstappen Lives for the Race

Whether it’s winning the Nürburgring 24 Hours iRacing event from his motorhome during an F1 weekend or testing GT3 setups late into the night, Max Verstappen is a “racing machine.” His participation in this event is a testament to his pure love for the sport. With his F1 contract running until 2028, this weekend offers a glimpse into a future where he might seek to add a Le Mans or Daytona title to his trophy cabinet.
