The Hunt for Glory: Team Kenya Kicks Off Deaflympics Campaign in Tokyo
The wait is over! Kenya is fully prepared to make its mark at the Tokyo 2025 Deaflympics, with competitive action officially beginning on Sunday. The nation’s representatives are set to compete across five disciplines—athletics, swimming, golf, men’s handball, and women’s basketball—in the 25th edition of the global multi-sport event, which runs until November 26. With Kenya traditionally performing strongly on the world stage, expectations are high for a successful medal haul.

Basketball: Ready to Rattle the Giants
The women’s basketball team will be the first athletes from Kenya to take the court, opening their Group “A” campaign at the Ota-City General Gymnasium. They face a tough group, featuring strong opposition from Australia, Lithuania, and Italy. Groups B and C also feature heavyweights, highlighting the calibre of competition at the tournament.
Despite the challenging draw, the team is heading to Tokyo with a winning mindset. Towering defender Sylvia Adhiambo has issued a confident warning to their opening opponents, Australia, stating that the team’s systems are ready and their “focus is the podium.” Head coach Mary Chepkoi echoed this determination, noting that the team is eyeing a powerful start in what marks their third Deaflympics appearance. The team’s historic first-ever Deaflympics win in 2022, where they thrashed hosts Brazil 98–12 to finish seventh, serves as a powerful source of inspiration. However, Chepkoi emphasized the absolute necessity of effective discipline, particularly around the boards, to counter the height of the Australian squad.

Handball: Looking to Shock the Group
Later on Sunday, the men’s handball team will begin their quest for glory against Serbia at the Komazawa Olympic Park Indoor Arena. Their Group “A” is equally formidable, containing not only Serbia but also defending champions Croatia and strong contenders France.
Goalkeeper Samuel Gitonga will be a central figure in Kenya’s defense, and he stated that the team has studied Serbia closely and knows exactly where to strike. The emphasis is on a strong start to pick maximum points. Head coach Jack Habert believes that success will hinge on discipline and tactical execution. Having prepared since the last Deaflympics in 2022, the coach is confident that if the team adheres strictly to instructions, they have a strong chance of overcoming their Serbian opponents.

Building on a Strong Foundation
While the team sports are generating immediate excitement, Kenya traditionally shines in individual events. The nation will also be competing in athletics, swimming, and golf, where the contingent has historically secured numerous medals. These athletes are poised to deliver strong results and contribute significantly to Kenya‘s overall medal tally.
The energy within the camp has been overwhelmingly positive. The teams feel ready, and the nation is watching with growing expectations. This 25th edition of the Deaflympics is not just an opportunity for the athletes to compete; it is a chance to represent Kenya’s rising reputation in global sports and showcase the country’s deep well of talent, discipline, and determination on the world stage.
