CHAN 2024: Harambee Stars Hit with Ksh 2.5 Million Fine for Kasarani Security Lapses

Kenya’s participation in CHAN 2024 has taken a controversial turn after CAF slapped the Harambee Stars with a Ksh 2.5 million fine over serious security breaches during their recent home match at Kasarani Stadium.

The breaches reportedly included inadequate crowd control measures, fans accessing restricted areas, and insufficient perimeter security — all of which CAF cited as violations of tournament regulations.

 What Happened at Kasarani?

During the high-stakes group stage clash, passionate fans filled Kasarani to capacity. While the electric atmosphere boosted the team, it also led to overcrowding, with several incidents of fans jumping barriers to get closer to the pitch. Stewards and police struggled to maintain order, leading to stoppages in play.

CAF’s disciplinary committee concluded that the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) failed to provide adequate safety measures, prompting the hefty penalty.

 FKF’s Response

FKF acknowledged the fine, promising to review and improve stadium safety protocols before the next CHAN fixture. Officials assured fans that additional stewards, better crowd management systems, and stricter ticketing checks will be in place.

“The safety of fans and players is our top priority. We are working with security agencies to ensure Kasarani meets CAF’s standards,” an FKF spokesperson stated.

Looking Ahead

Despite the setback, the Harambee Stars remain focused on their CHAN campaign. With crucial matches ahead, Kenya will be eager to bounce back on the pitch while restoring order off it.
