CAF limits Kasarani crowd to 27,000, bans paper tickets for Harambee Stars CHAN matches
New Restrictions After Security Breaches
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed strict new measures for Harambee Stars’ CHAN 2024 home matches at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. Following repeated crowd control failures, CAF has capped stadium attendance at 27,000 fans, just 60% of its full capacity.
️ Paper Tickets Banned
CAF has also banned thermal paper tickets, citing widespread misuse and gate overruns. Entry will now be strictly limited to electronic ticket holders, with digital verification at all gates.
What Prompted the Decision?
The move comes after chaotic scenes during Kenya’s 1-0 win over Morocco, where fans breached fences, overwhelmed security, and entered without valid tickets. Similar incidents occurred during the opener against DR Congo, leading to a KSh 2.5 million fine for FKF.
CAF’s Official Statement
CAF stated:
“Failure to implement these directives may result in more serious sanctions, including the consideration of alternative venues for future matches of the Host Team.”
Public Awareness Campaign
Kenya’s Local Organizing Committee (LOC) has been directed to launch a nationwide media campaign to educate fans on safety protocols and entry requirements.
️ Safety First
Additional measures include:
- Enhanced CCTV coverage
- Increased police presence
- Medical incident reporting CAF emphasized that these steps are essential to protect fans, staff, and the integrity of the tournament.
