Kenya’s dream of hosting the prestigious AFCON 2027 is hanging by a thread. The road to AFCON 2027 has also been a political tug-of-war. The Ministry of Sports recently sought to increase the budget from Sh3.5 billion to Sh5 billion to match the high standards seen in previous tournaments, such as those in Morocco. However, the National Assembly Committee on Sports initially rejected this proposal, urging more moderate spending given the joint nature of the bid.

While the committee has expressed a willingness to help engage the National Treasury for the necessary funds, the clock is ticking. The upcoming 2026/27 financial year budget includes allocations for sports development, but for the AFCON 2027 project, the money needs to move faster than the players on the pitch.

What Happens Next?

The next few weeks are “extra time” for the Kenyan government. To save the bid, the National Treasury must prioritize the Sh3.9 billion CAF fee before the March 30 deadline. Simultaneously, funds must be released to contractors to get workers back on-site at Kasarani and Nyayo. If these two pillars—finance and infrastructure—aren’t secured immediately, Kenya risks watching the 2027 tournament from the sidelines.
