Champions League Registration: Why New Signers Must Wait to Play
The January transfer window is always a period of high drama and massive investment, but for clubs competing in Europe, there is a complex set of rules to navigate. While fans are eager to see their new superstar signings in action immediately, the Champions League has strict registration windows that often force these new arrivals to watch from the stands during the final stages of the league phase.

Understanding these regulations is crucial for supporters of teams like Manchester City and Tottenham, who have been active in the market but find themselves unable to field their latest acquisitions just yet.
The Post-League Phase Registration Rule
Under the current UEFA framework, any player signed during the January transfer window is ineligible to compete in the Champions League until the Champions League phase has officially concluded. This rule ensures that the initial integrity of the squad registered at the start of the season is maintained through the primary group stage. Once the league phase ends, clubs are given a small window to update their rosters. The deadline for this update is Thursday, February 5. During this time, teams are permitted to register a maximum of three new players for the knockout rounds. These same regulations apply across the board for the Europa League and the Conference League, making the start of February a frantic time for administrative staff across Europe.
Big Names Missing for City and Spurs
This registration gap has immediate consequences for some of the Premier League’s biggest clubs. Manchester City, for instance, has bolstered its squad with the additions of Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi. However, because the Champions League league phase still has two games remaining, Pep Guardiola will have to do without them for the upcoming trip to face Bodo/Glimt and the final clash against Turkish giants Galatasaray.

Similarly, Tottenham’s new midfield engine, Conor Gallagher, will be sidelined for their European fixtures. While he is expected to be a mainstay in Thomas Frank’s domestic lineups, he will remain unavailable for the high-profile matches against German sides Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt. For these stars, their European debut in their new colors will have to wait until the knockout stages begin in late February.
The Exception: List A vs. List B
Interestingly, not every player returning to a club in January is barred from playing. A perfect example is Manchester City’s Max Alleyne. Despite being recalled from a loan spell at Watford this month, Alleyne remains eligible to play in the Champions League immediately.

This is because UEFA distinguishes between “List A” and “List B” squads. List A consists of 25 first-team players, including a minimum of eight locally trained athletes. List B, however, is reserved for youth players born after January 1, 2004, who meet specific homegrown criteria. Since Alleyne is 20 years old and has spent three consecutive years at City, he qualifies for List B, allowing him to bypass the standard January registration block.
The End of the Cup-Tied Era
It is important to remember that while the timing of registration is strict, the old “cup-tied” rule is a thing of the past. Since the 2018-19 season, players are allowed to represent two different clubs in the Champions League within the same season. This change has paved the way for historic moments, such as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s move from Napoli to Paris St-Germain last January.

The Georgian winger was able to jump straight into the PSG squad for the knockout rounds and eventually helped the Parisians secure their first-ever European title.
