Kylian Mbappe Wins Major Legal Battle Against Paris St-Germain
The long-standing legal feud between French superstar Kylian Mbappe and his former club, Paris St-Germain (PSG), has reached a significant milestone. A Paris labour court has ordered the French champions to pay the forward a staggering 60 million euros (approximately £52.5 million) in unpaid wages and bonuses.

While this amount is only a fraction of what the player originally sought, the ruling marks a definitive victory for the France captain in a dispute that has overshadowed the final year of his career in Paris.
The Core of the Financial Dispute
The legal battle began following Kylian Mbappe’s high-profile departure to Real Madrid on a free transfer last summer. The forward claimed that PSG had intentionally withheld significant sums of money owed to him under his contract. After hearing arguments from both sides in November, the court ruled on Tuesday that the club had failed to honour its commitments during the final months of the player’s tenure. Specifically, the court identified that PSG failed to pay three months of salary between April and June 2024.

Additionally, the awarded sum includes the third installment of a massive signing-on bonus, an ethics bonus, and a paid leave allowance. While Kylian Mbappe had initially pursued a much larger figure—roughly 263 million euros—as damages for alleged ill-treatment and contract disputes, the court focused primarily on the specific unpaid contractual obligations.
PSG’s Counter-Claims Rejected
Throughout the proceedings, PSG maintained that they acted with integrity. The club’s legal team argued that Kylian Mbappe had verbally agreed to forgo certain bonuses to protect the club’s financial health after he decided not to extend his contract. Furthermore, the club attempted to counter-sue Kylian Mbappe for hundreds of millions of euros, citing damages caused by his refusal to accept a record-breaking 300 million euro transfer to the Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal in 2023.

However, the Paris labour court rejected these counter-claims, along with some of the player’s additional demands for damages. The ruling establishes a precedent that labour laws apply even within the multi-billion dollar football industry, reinforcing that signed contracts must be honoured regardless of verbal negotiations or surrounding transfer drama. As part of the judgment, PSG is even required to display the full court ruling on the front page of their official website for one month.
A Complicated Legacy at the Parc des Princes
Despite the bitter legal ending, Kylian Mbappe leaves a massive sporting legacy in the French capital. Between 2017 and 2024, he won 15 trophies and became the club’s all-time leading scorer with 256 goals. However, his final two years were marred by tension. He was famously left out of the 2023 pre-season tour and missed the opening match of his final campaign as the club pressured him to either sign an extension or accept a move to the Saudi Pro League.

Now a key figure for Real Madrid, the forward’s representatives expressed satisfaction with the ruling, noting that it restores the “simple truth” regarding contractual obligations. While PSG has indicated they may still appeal the decision, they have also expressed a desire to move forward and focus on their collective future success without their former talisman.
