Unavoidable Exit: Wolves Sack Vitor Pereira After Winless Premier League Start
Wolves have made the difficult but necessary decision to part ways with head coach Vitor Pereira following a disastrous start to the Premier League season. Despite having signed a new three-year contract just two months ago in September, the Portuguese manager was relieved of his duties after the team failed to secure a single league victory in their first ten games, leaving them rooted to the bottom of the table and eight points adrift of safety.

The final straw came with a disappointing 3-0 defeat by Fulham on Saturday, which Pereira himself described as “maybe the worst performance for my team.” The sacking signals a fresh start for Wolves, who desperately need a change of fortunes to avoid a devastating return to the Championship.
The Sudden Downfall After a Promising Start
Pereira’s initial tenure at Wolves was marked by success. He took charge in December 2024 with the team languishing near the relegation zone and, thanks to a significant upswing in form that included a six-match winning run, successfully guided them to Premier League safety, finishing 16th. This achievement earned him the three-year contract extension in September, a move designed to signify stability for the club.
However, the positivity quickly evaporated this season. The team began the campaign with five consecutive league losses and is now on a run of three successive defeats. With just two points secured from two draws—both ending with late equalizers conceded against Tottenham and Brighton—the lack of fight and results, including losses to all three promoted clubs (Leeds, Sunderland, and Burnley), proved too much for the hierarchy to ignore.
External Factors and Fan Frustration
While the results on the pitch were unacceptable, the circumstances surrounding Pereira’s start to the season were challenging. Wolves lost several key players over the summer, significantly weakening the squad. High-profile departures included Matheus Cunha to Manchester United for £62.5m, Rayan Ait-Nouri to Manchester City for £31m, and captain Nelson Semedo on a free transfer to Fenerbahce.

Pereira was tasked with bedding in six new recruits while dealing with the distraction of speculation over striker Jorgen Strand Larsen’s future.
However, the mounting frustration from the fans eventually focused squarely on the manager. A section of supporters turned on Pereira after the 3-2 loss to Burnley, leading to a heated discussion at Molineux where the coach had to be escorted away. This breakdown in the relationship between the manager and the faithful undoubtedly accelerated the club’s decision, with the executive chairman, Jeff Shi, noting that “results and performances this term have fallen below acceptable standards.”
The Search for a New Leader
With Pereira and his entire eight-person backroom staff now gone, Wolves have tasked their academy coaches, James Collins (Under-21s) and Richard Walker (Under-18s), with taking charge of first-team training while the club searches for a permanent head coach.
The club finds itself in a precarious position, battling against the drop with a squad that is acknowledged to have issues following the summer transfers. The quick dismissal, despite the recent contract, reflects the desperation to halt the slide and ensure their long-term survival in the top flight. The next appointment will be critical and will likely define the remainder of the season for Wolves.
