The €1 Million Row: Why Martin Zubimendi’s Arsenal Transfer is Heading to Court

Martin Zubimendi has been an undeniable success story since his £51 million arrival at Arsenal last summer. The Spanish midfielder has quickly become a pivotal figure, helping the Gunners climb to the top of the Premier League table. However, while the 26-year-old is thriving in North London, his record transfer has triggered a bitter and messy legal dispute back in the Basque Country, involving his two former youth clubs: Real Sociedad and Antiguoko.

Antiguoko, the small youth club where Martin Zubimendi spent five formative years, is now taking legal action, claiming they are owed a substantial payment from the transfer.

The Unpaid Debt and the Breakdown in Relations

The core of the dispute revolves around a historical agreement concerning Martin Zubimendi‘s development. Antiguoko claims that when the player signed for Real Sociedad at the age of 12, the clubs agreed that Antiguoko would receive a 5% cut of any future transfer fee, up to a maximum of €1 million (approximately £870,000).

According to Antiguoko’s technical director, Real Sociedad collected the full transfer fee from Arsenal but has failed to pay the agreed-upon 5%. This financial dispute, which is now headed to court, highlights what Antiguoko describes as a “very bad” relationship between the two Basque clubs. Antiguoko stresses that this money is vital, as it is directly invested into their youth academy, which relies on such payments to continue operating and developing talent.

A Deeper Feud: Territoriality and Suppression

The row over Martin Zubimendi’s transfer fee is not an isolated incident; it appears to be part of a deeper, long-running feud between the two organizations. Antiguoko’s boss expressed strong feelings that Real Sociedad is “obsessed with crushing us at all levels” and wants them to become “more and more inferior.”

A specific example of this perceived suppression is a local law put in place that prevents boys and girls up to the Under-14 category from towns bordering San Sebastián from signing for Antiguoko. This “territoriality” law effectively cuts off Antiguoko’s primary recruitment area, a rule they describe as “madness” and a clear attempt to monopolize local youth talent. They drew a comparison, suggesting it would be akin to a child from a London suburb being banned from signing for any other club within the city until the age of 14.

Arteta Connection and a Delayed Celebration

The saga also features a connection to the current Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, who himself started his football journey at Antiguoko. The club has already planned to honor Martin Zubimendi for his sporting achievements, but even this goodwill gesture has been complicated by the feud.

Antiguoko revealed that they were forced to cancel an official event last season to reward Zubimendi because Real Sociedad refused to grant him authorization to attend and collect the award. The youth club is now planning to reschedule the event for the end of this season, expressing confidence that a former Antiguoko player like Mikel Arteta will not pose any problems for the event. The dispute underscores the complex, often fraught relationships between large professional clubs and the smaller academies that nurture the stars of the future, even when those stars go on to achieve great success like Martin Zubimendi has done at Arsenal.
